A pop-up collaboration with Dream Bird Art Studio for ages 8-12

2 hr
75 US dollars
1116 Arlington St

Service Description

Murals are a beautiful way to connect with community through creative practice. Hosted by Mrs. Megan and Caroline Truong, owner and director of Dream Bird Art School and a fabulously talented muralist, this workshop is an opportunity for your child to extend their art practice by learning how to paint on a larger scale and making a unique personal contribution to this mural project. The first portion of the workshop will feature indoor skill-building during which the children will gain experience painting on a larger scale. The second portion will take place outside at the site of the mural, overseen by both Megan and Caroline. Megan and Caroline's shared passion for learning, community engagement, and arts education is the foundation for this partnership. This collaboration serves as a powerful reminder to advocate for arts education, to embrace and nurture the artist within each of us, and to support others on their own creative journeys. ABOUT THE MURAL PROJECT Ellen O'Neal was a student at Harvard Elementary when she passed away from brain cancer at the age of 7 in 2001. With this mural, “Seeds of Creativity,” we wish to honor the beautiful legacy of Ellen's love for art that has been sustained over more than twenty years by her mother, Jo Ellen Snow, and her mother’s close friends, who set up a competitive scholarship at every grade level at the school. The scholarship sends the winners of the yearly art competition to art camp at Artopia. The free access to art camp, and the joyful participation in the themed-art competition by the entire student body each year, keep Ellie's creative spirit alive. About the Mural’s Location The mural is being painted on the back side of Mrs. Megan's garage, located at 1118 Arlington St. We will spend time working in the studio located at 1116 before we head outside to work on the mural itself. While working on the mural, we will be situated in the alley behind 1118 Arlington. This portion of the alley is not in use/not accessible to cars, so we will not need to worry about disruptions. How to Prepare Your Child Because we will be working outside, it is critical to make sure your child is prepared to work comfortably and safely: close-toed shoes, breathable clothing that supports easy movement, and a hat (not required but ideal). It is also highly recommended for your child to arrive wearing sunscreen and bug spray. Because of time limits, we cannot bear responsibility for applying sunscreen and bug spray.
